I would like to talk about running injuries…not the silly, barely worth mentioning injuries like Patella-Femoral syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis, or Iliotibial Band Syndrome. I’m talking about the serious injuries that can occur while running. Just this past weekend, two of my comrades have had disaster filled runs! My friend Chris, during an 18 kilometre run, was hit by a car, and was taken out by a newspaper tie (which was jettisoned at him by a lawnmower!). Crazy, right? Wait, it gets better…these both occurred early in the run, and he completed his ...
I feel like I should warn you who is writing, although I’m sure you can figure it out pretty quickly. It’s Matt this week, Kim is off running or something… Well, it’s been an eventful couple of weeks. As I write this, I’m recovering from a cold that has forced me to miss my runs this week. I must say that it’s a little disconcerting that I judge the severity of a cold now by how many runs I miss (this was a 2 run cold, not bad really). I guess maybe ...
With all of the focus on training, and paces, sometimes I forget one of the simplest joys of running. In times of stress, the simple act of going out for a run can be such a cathartic experience. Over the past week, running has been a true opportunity for me to get out of my own head, and let it all out on the road. How wonderful it is to be able to let your mind and emotions go. To be yourself, to allow yourself the freedom to just BE. We are all frail, ...
You might have read the title of this blog and thought, why is Kim setting another challenge, so soon after running Boston? Well, that’s because this isn’t Kim! That’s right, I had to wait until she was tired from running Boston, but I crushed her in the arm wrestle and the blog is mine once again! And, in the spirit of Boston, I hope you like dem apples. Actually, you’re going to be hearing from me more over the next while… Wait, don’t stop reading! Kim will be writing as ...
What follows is my Boston recap. If you find yourself pressed for time, let me present the Cliff Notes version “It was hot. I finished.” Now, if you have the time and interest, let’s get into it, shall we? The Boston Marathon is the best race experience I have ever had as a whole. The entire city of Boston is all about the marathon. The advertising is everywhere, “Boston is all in!”. The residents, hotels, restaurants, everybody is so welcoming and supportive of the runners. It’s awesome. You hit the expo, and it’s packed with excited ...
Well, this is it. The home stretch. In less than one week, I will be running the Boston marathon. Just me, and about 25,000 other people. A nice, quiet, relaxed run. Back when I was swimming, I was turned on to a guy named Dr. Keith Bell. He is a sports psychologist, and has worked with elite level swimmers. The book that really made a difference for me was called “Winning Isn’t Normal”. It contained a lot of mental tools and techniques, and I took these to heart. ...
